The Hot Toddy is a very popular drink in the United Kingdom. It consists of a kind of cocktail, based on water with honey, liquor and different spices, which is served very hot. It is perfect to warm up these cold days. But it is also a drink to which medicinal properties are attributed. If you dare to try this curious and original drink, do not miss the Hot Toddy recipe.

Hot Toddy recipe, a drink to fight cold and colds

This drink, as we said, is typical of the United Kingdom. In Ireland it is known as Hot Whisky, where this cocktail acquired the enormous fame it has today. Although it is said that its origin is Scottish.

A multitude of beneficial and healing properties are attributed to the Hot Toddy. In fact, it is traditional to drink it before going to bed in countries with cold and humid climates to alleviate symptoms of flu or colds. It is also an infallible remedy simply to warm up.

Homemade Hot Toddy Recipe

Preparing this drink is very simple. And, in addition, we have a multitude of options to go out of the original recipe and give it our own touch. The Hot Toddy is made with alcoholic beverages; the most common is whiskey, but we can use many other beverages. It also contains hot water and honey, or any other sweetener of your choice. For example, in Canada honey is replaced by maple syrup.

We are going to use Whisky for this recipe, as it is the most popular drink to make Hot Toddy. But you can substitute it with another liquor of your choice. For example, rum is delicious. And you can also try it with Brandy.

Although we will simply use hot water for this recipe, some people add tea. So, if you dare to try it this way, add one or two tea bags to the hot water before preparing the mixture. It will give a delicious touch!

We will also use honey, which you can substitute for any other sweetener, even sugar. Although the medicinal properties of the drink will not be the same because, to use it as a home remedy, honey is one of the most fundamental pillars.
And finally, take the courage and replace (or combine) the lemon juice with orange juice. Or add other spices of your choice such as ginger or a cinnamon stick to give it a delicious touch.
