Hamburgers are a food (believe it or not) with centuries of history. Since the first century, the Roman Empire was already preparing what we know today as Hamburger. And with so much history and so many years of antiquity, in addition to the enormous fame of this food, it is not surprising that we have 1001 ways to make hamburgers. So that you never run out of ideas, here we bring you a multitude of ingredients and toppings for burgers. Combining these toppings as you like, you will get a multitude of different types of burgers. You won’t get tired of this dish!

1001 Types of Burgers: Ingredients and Toppings for your burgers

What is in a hamburger?

A good hamburger cannot lack, of course, the bread. But what if we make homemade hamburger bread? It also has the hamburger itself (the meat is also called hamburger, although they can be made with vegetables or even fish); some vegetable accompaniment, cheese and sauces. With so many ingredients, the possibilities of combining them are endless.

In this image, we have summarized (some) ingredients or toppings that we can use to make hamburgers. Combine them as you like, experiment with sauces, and try several toppings at the same time.

From choosing the type of hamburger: If we want meat or fish. If, on the contrary, it is going to be vegetable, using some vegetable or legume. To the accompaniments that we are going to put, or the bread in which we are going to serve it, we have infinity of options. There is a perfect hamburger for every person on earth.

And, with so many options on the table, let’s take a closer look at the ingredients of hamburgers and the types of hamburgers we can make.

Burgers Ingredients and toppings

The bread

As we were saying, with so many ingredients in good burgers, we can play a lot with the different combinations. We will start with the base of the hamburger, the bread. It is the pillar of the hamburger, because, although we put a lot of effort in making the perfect hamburger, if we do not have a good bread… We will spoil everything. Regarding the bread, we have a multitude of options, depending on how we like it or what types of burgers we want to prepare. Some options are: Classic hamburger bun, Brioche Bread, Rustic, Mollete, Crystal Bread, Chapata Mini or Whole wheat bread.

The meat, or rather, the hamburger itself

After the bun, which is a very important element in our hamburger, comes the hamburger itself, which can be prepared with thousands of ingredients. Do you want a vegetable hamburger? Try the chickpea burger, spinach, zucchini, lentils, beans, pumpkin… You can prepare burgers of practically any vegetable.

Or do you prefer fish burgers? Although the most common to prepare hamburgers with salmon, tuna or hake, as with vegetables, we can make it with a multitude of fish.

If you are not convinced by any of the above, you can always go to the classics, the meat burger. But… What kind of meat? Here the options are also many, you can make it with chicken (breaded as in this recipe, or without breading), veal, lamb, beef, pork, mixed meat… Or even Pulled Pork or larded meat.

Some key ingredients for your burgers: Toppings

If we already have so many options to choose from with just the base of our hamburger, let’s move on to the toppings for hamburgers. Here the range opens up enormously. Moreover, the possibilities of combining them with each other are literally endless. Try to make your burger in a harmonious way depending on the type of bread and the ingredients you have chosen to make your burger. For example, for chicken, one of the sauces that suits it best (to my taste) is mayonnaise. But like everything in the kitchen, it is a matter of taste. It will also depend on whether you want your burger completely vegetable or not. As you will see below, there are infinite types of hamburgers that you can prepare.

Burgers Ingredients: Cheeses

To choose the cheese, the only condition to take into account is: to find it in the supermarket. And the fact is that literally any type of cheese goes well with hamburgers. Sliced or spread on bread, any shape, any color and any flavor, without a doubt, it goes well with your hamburger.
Some of the most commonly used cheeses for this delicious and popular food are: Sliced Cheddar, Mozarella, Brie, Burrata, Mahon, Rulo de Cabra, Gorgonzola, Camembert, American Cheese, Gouda, Gruyere, Feta Cheese, Manchego Cheese, Blue Cheese.

What if you put the cheese inside the hamburger meat? This is how you make this popular American burger, the Minneapolis burger or Jucy Lucy.

Accompaniments

We enter the great world of the accompaniments, here we have a whole range of possibilities and a multitude of ingredients with which to accompany our hamburger. Some of the most commonly used toppings are:

Of animal origin: Bacon, Egg (fried, boiled, poached), sobrassada, cooked ham, salami, Foie, Pate, Iberian ham…
Vegetable Origin: Lettuce, arugula, sliced tomato, dried tomato, onion (raw, grilled, fried, caramelized, rings), jalapeños, avocado, pickle, pear in wine, spinach, piquillo peppers, pineapple, mushrooms, strawberries, truffle, fries (inside the hamburger, of course)…

Incorporate one of each type, or two, three, four… whatever your jaw can handle. For example, a classic accompaniment to my homemade hamburgers is cooked ham, with lettuce and tomato. But if you want to innovate, with sobrasada, grilled onion and spicy honey sauce, you will get a spectacular contrast in your burger.

If you still think that there are few types of hamburgers with all these combinations, let’s go to the star of the hamburgers: the sauces.

Sauces, one of the fundamental ingredients of hamburgers

Of all the ingredients that we can use to make hamburgers, I would say that my favorite (although it is complicated to choose) is the sauce. And it is the one that will crown our burger. Only with the sauce we can completely change the result of our burger, and we can also combine them as we like.
Let’s see just a few examples of the sauces that will best suit your burger:

Ketchup, BBQ, Mustard, Cheddar Sauce, Blue Cheese Sauce, Fried Tomato, Burger Sauce, Deluxe Sauce, Guacamole, Cream Cheese and Yogurt Sauce, Mayonnaise, Jack Daniels Sauce, Honey Mustard, Aioli, Pesto, Cranberry Sauce, Spicy Honey, Mushroom Sauce, Brava Sauce, Chimichurri….

Besides, if your sauce is homemade, it will improve the result considerably; and making any of these sauces is very easy.

10 Types of very original burgers

If after seeing so many options of ingredients for burgers you are still undecided, do not worry, we are going to leave you 10 ways to combine these toppings that will be spectacular. Don’t miss these burgers with name and surname, you’ll love them! And, of course, feel free to modify each recipe to make it completely to your liking, using the above list of ingredients and toppings for burgers.

  • Caesar Burger: Breaded chicken burger on rustic bread, lettuce, apple, york ham and caesar sauce. Who would have thought that taking a bite of this salad could be even more delicious than we thought?
  • Hamburguesa Brava: Beef burger, on a rustic bun, with brava sauce, cheddar cheese, tomato and lettuce. A recipe for a very Mediterranean hamburger, more specifically, very Madrilenian. And if you are a spicy lover, you will love this burger.
  • La Hamburguesa Cubana: Pork burger, on brioche bun, with mozzarella, lettuce, tomato and fried egg, and guacamole sauce.
  • Veggie Burger: Chickpea burger on glass bun, with raw onion, tomato and avocado, camembert cheese and mayonnaise.
  • Marine Burger: Salmon burger in a mollete bun, with avocado, tomato and grilled onion, gouda cheese and pesto sauce.
  • Extra Cheeseburger: Only for cheese lovers. Beef burger on classic bun, with gruyere and goat cheese, raw onion, bacon and cranberry sauce.
  • Tex Mex Burger: Beef burger on rustic bun, with jalapenos, tomato and avocado, cheddar cheese and Jack Daniels sauce.
  • Iberian Burger: Pork Burger on brioche bun, with ham, tomato and lettuce, gouda cheese and blue cheese sauce.
  • Hamburguesa Silvestre: Beef burger on classic bun, with bacon and camembert cheese with mushroom sauce.
  • Ribs Burger: Shredded rib-eye steak burger, in a mollete bun, with bacon, lettuce, tomato and fried onion, with brie and mozzarella cheese and barbecue sauce.
