But first, do you know what Poke is? In Hawaiian means “cut, chop”, is a kind of salad based on raw fish that is accompanied with different fresh ingredients.
It is a dish originally from Hawaii, where it was invented by fishermen as a quick and simple recipe to consume protein while working, and without wasting too much time.

Later, it was the Japanese, Korean and Filipino immigrants who, thanks to their influence on the island, contributed their ingredients and traditions to the Poke Bowl. Thus creating the famous Hawaiian Poke Bowl.

Over time and thanks to social networks, this dish has become enormously popular. And yes, thanks to social networks because this dish owes much of its fame to the fact that it has been one of the most photographed recipes for social networks. Which has contributed greatly to the fame it has now.

International Poke Bowl Day

And, of course, the Hawaiian Poke also has its own day on the calendar. And it is celebrated every September 28th. Although we have done a lot of research on the origin of this day, we have not found its authors, although it must be a very recent celebration considering that this dish became popular in North America in 2014.

But we do not rule out that it is a great marketing work devised by one of the many Poke restaurants that, between 2014 and 2016 opened their doors to ride the wave of the Hawaiian bowl boom. Because without a doubt, it’s a perfect day to go for an authentic Poke Bowl.

Ingredients

  • 100 g Jasmine rice
  • 100 g Fresh bluefin tuna
  • 1/2 Avocado
  • 1/2 Mango
  • 1 Chives
  • Nori seaweed
  • Wakame

For the dressing

  • 1 Tsp Sesame oil
  • 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • Sesame seeds (to taste)
  • Salt (to taste, optional)
  • 1 Lemon

Instructions

  • We begin by cooking the rice. We simply put in a small saucepan a little water with a drizzle of oil and the rice. We bring to the boil and cook until it is to our liking.
  • Meanwhile, cut all the ingredients into small cubes. We can cut the tuna before it has thawed completely, so it will be easier to cut it into small cubes.
  • We continue preparing the sauce. Simply mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Add the tuna and let it stand for 10 minutes in the refrigerator with the marinade. This will give us time for the rice to finish cooking.
  • When the rice is cooked, drain it and put it in a bowl. Add the avocado, mango and spring onion. Also the tuna with the sauce. And add the seaweed, previously hydrated.
Now you can serve this wonderful traditional Hawaiian Poke Bowl.
