Meatballs are one of the most appreciated dishes of our gastronomy. This simple recipe, which is nothing more than a small ball, usually made of minced meat, is a very old dish with centuries of history. And, in addition, very appreciated. That is why they also have their own day in the calendar. Festivity that, as it could not be otherwise, had its origin in the United States. Although they are known worldwide, let’s see what this dish is all about. Well, just as it is a delicious recipe, it is as simple as it is good. Since they are nothing more than small balls, normally of minced meat; that later are fried, boiled, roasted… Depending on the recipe. And, this versatile dish can be elaborated in a multitude of different ways, depending on the country.
In the same way, although the classic and most popular ones are of meat, we can elaborate them with multitude of ingredients and make vegetable meatballs, of fish or with the combinations that more we like.

Being a dish so well known all over the world, of which each country has its own elaborate, it is not surprising that it has its own day marked on the calendar.
Although, as with the vast majority of gastronomic anniversaries, this one also has its origin in the United States. Where meatballs became very popular after Italian immigrants there prepared their famous spaghetti with meatballs.
There, every March 9 is celebrated the Meatball Day, known as National Meatball Day, as we saw in our gastronomic calendar.
If you are also a big fan of meatballs (which is not surprising, because it is one of the few dishes that everyone likes), you can not fail to celebrate this day as it deserves.
And, there is no better celebration than making your own plate of meatballs. We propose, to celebrate it, the classic recipe of meatballs in sauce. Just like grandmothers make them.

You can shape them by putting small portions of minced meat in a glass with a little flour. Shake the glass with an encircling motion, making the meat turn around inside the glass. This way, you will make your meatballs in a jiffy and without staining a finger. It is also a much faster technique than if we shape them by hand.
The origin of meatballs is much debated, and is not known with certainty. In fact, we find a multitude of recipes consisting of meatballs, but each one with its own nuances depending on the country. Therefore, marking an exact place of origin of meatballs is a very complicated task.
For example, we found a record of the dumpling recipe in a Chinese recipe book, around 221 B.C. This could be one of the oldest records of this recipe. But we cannot be sure.
Similar elaborations were also known in Ancient Rome. In fact, the Roman cookbook Apicius has several recipes for meatballs.
Much later, when meatballs were already an established recipe in Europe, they crossed the pond. And, in 1880, Italian immigrants created an Italian-American dish mixing spaghetti and meatballs, a recipe that was a great success.
They liked these meatballs so much that they even decided to put them in a sandwich. Thus was born, in the 20th century, the Meatball sub, the recipe we have seen.
