But if you’ve been left wanting to know some history about this cocktail, join us to discover its origin:

History of this cocktail, How was it born?

Many are the legends that revolve around the creation of this cocktail. But, if all these stories have something in common, it is the approximate date of its origin. And they all seem to agree that the Mojito was born in the 16th century, in Cuba.

At that time, a drink called guarapo was very common in Cuba. Which was simply the juice of sugar cane. And, one of the many legends about the origin of this delicious cocktail, says that it was born thanks to the guarapo.

When a pirate ship arrived in Cuba, the hospitable locals immediately offered them guarapo to drink. One of the corsairs on board, Francis Drake, as soon as he tasted it, decided to add rum, lime and mint, thus giving birth to the mojito.

But this is only one of the many legends and stories that revolve around the Mojito. It could also have originated as a curative drink, to alleviate the symptoms of the so common scurvy. A sailors’ disease that ravaged the crews at that time.
