Traditional Thanksgiving Apple Pie Recipe
Ingredients
For the dough
- 1 Egg
- 1 tbsp Apple cider vinegar
- 1 Cup cold water
- 3 Cups Flour
- 1 Cup Butter
- 1 Pinch Salt
- 1 tbsp Sugar
For the apple stuffing
- 2 sour apples
- 3 sweet apples
- 1 Lemon
- 1/2 Cup Brown sugar
- 2 tbsp Flour
- 1 tsp Cinnamon powder
- Vanilla essence (a few drops)
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tbsp Butter
- Icing Sugar
Instructions
- We will begin by separating the egg white from the yolk. Take the yolk and mix it with the apple cider vinegar and a couple of tablespoons of water. Mix and set aside.1 Egg, 1 tbsp Apple cider vinegar
To make the dough
- Now, we are going to beat the egg white well. Add another tablespoon of water and set aside. In a large bowl, sift the flour, add the butter at room temperature, salt and sugar. Mix well with your hands. Add the egg white mixture little by little while continuing to mix, until a homogeneous dough is formed. Make two balls with the dough.1 Egg, 3 Cups Flour, 1 Cup Butter, 1 Pinch Salt, 1 tbsp Sugar, 1 Cup cold water
- Now place each ball of dough between two transparent kitchen films. Press it to make a round base the size of the mold you are going to use. Do the same with the two balls.Set aside in the refrigerator for at least one hour.
Let's move on to the stuffing.
- Peel the apples and cut them into wedges about one finger thick. In a bowl, mix the apples with the lemon juice, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, vanilla essence and salt.2 sour apples, 3 sweet apples, 1 Lemon, 1/2 Cup Brown sugar, 2 tbsp Flour, 1 tsp Cinnamon powder, Vanilla essence, 1 tsp Salt
- Preheat the oven to about 370ºF. In the mold where you are going to make the cake, place as a base one of the dough that we had kept in the refrigerator, removing the paper towel. Try to keep the edges of the dough on the sides of the mold to be able to "close" it when you put the dough on top.Put on top the apple segments that we had mixed with the rest of the ingredients in the bowl. Add some small balls of butter between the apples.Cover it with the other dough and put it together pressing with your fingers with the bottom one around the edges. Make a small cross-shaped cut in the center of the top dough, and paint it with the egg yolk and put it in the oven.1 Cup Butter
- Let it bake for 15 minutes at 370ºF. After that time, lower the temperature to 340ºF and let it bake for another 45 minutes, until you see that the crust is golden brown.Once ready, let it rest for a few minutes before taking it out of the oven, and serve it with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

You can use this same recipe to make a pie with any type of fruit. Although the original and most traditional for Thanksgiving dinner is apple pie, you can make it with any fruit you prefer. For example, cranberry pie is a delight. The dough is made in the same way. You only have to change the fruit you add in the filling.
And, once you get the hang of making this dough for your pies, you can give them a more personal touch by making small decorations with the dough for the top. Remember to paint them also with egg yolk to make them shiny and perfect.
