Ramen, for all those who do not know it, consists of a broth soup with noodles and various toppings. And it is an important icon of Japanese gastronomy. Although, according to history, this dish has an origin closely linked to China, as we will see below.
Brief history
A good way to celebrate Ramen Day is to learn a little more about this dish. And although the origin of this dish is uncertain, there are two major theories that revolve around the origin of Ramen. But both agree that, in any case, the creation of this dish would be thanks to China.
The first legend we find about this dish is about the feudal king Mitsukuni and the politician and writer Zhu. Zhu was forced an exile to flee from China. He arrived in Japan, where Mitsukuni welcomed him and helped him.
Zhu, as a sign of gratitude, prepared for the king a dish he knew well: the first Ramen to be made in Japan.
The second, somewhat more modern, story links this recipe to street food stalls run by Asian immigrants. At the end of the 19th century, Japan was leaving behind the hermeticism that had characterized it for years, receiving the visit of a multitude of immigrants from China.
Noodles are very present in the cuisine, as they originated there more than 3,000 years ago. And one of the most popular dishes in these street stalls was Ramen.
But it was not until August 25, 1958, when Momofuku Andō, founder and president of Nissin Foods, launched instant Ramen on the market. Thus marking this date in the calendar and being responsible for the fame that this popular Japanese soup has today.
Celebrate Ramen Day
That is why, coinciding with the launch of instant Ramen, this date has been chosen to pay tribute to this Japanese dish.
But in Japan, this day commemorates the instant. Since they have another day for the classic.
And it is celebrated every July 11. This date was marked by the Japan Ramen Association, in 2017, in order to support and promote the whole culture that revolves around this iconic dish.
In Japan, they celebrate July 11 because, for Japanese culture, the number 7 represents a ramen spoon, while the number 11 resembles the classic chopsticks.
Although it is also said that this date may have been chosen because of Tokugawa Mitsukuni, a Japanese feudal lord who had a lot to do with the creation of Ramen, according to legend. Since Mitsukuni (the Japanese feudal king who welcomed Zhu) was born on July 11, 1628.
On this day, the more than 80,000 restaurants that serve this dish in Japan celebrate it by preparing millions and millions of dishes.
