Cherries are one of the most appreciated fruits. This round, reddish fruit, with a small stone inside, delights young and old alike. Its sweet and pleasant flavor, together with the smooth texture of its flesh, make this fruit a natural treat. In addition, it is a very beneficial food for our organism, since it provides us with a multitude of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. For all these reasons, every August 28th is celebrated as Cherry Day. But it is not the only celebration that revolves around this fruit, as there are many more, as we will see below. Join us to celebrate Cherry Day by learning a little more about this fruit.
This fruit comes from the cherry tree, family of peaches, almonds and plums. And there are two main types of trees (within each, we can find other varieties): Prunus cerasus, or sour cherry; and Prunus avium, or sweet.
In addition, we know that this fruit has been with us for centuries. It has been known for more than 8,000 years. As early as 6,000 B.C., the juice of cherries was used to ferment and produce a kind of alcohol.
What do cherries provide us with?
Cherries are a very rich and healthy fruit. They have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as they are depurative.
But they are also a great ally for our nervous and vascular system.
They have a high satiating and laxative effect, as they are rich in fiber, and reduce the risk of diabetes. Among others.
For all these reasons, added to the pleasant taste they have, it is not surprising that it is one of the most appreciated fruits by all.
Cherry Day
Every August 28th is celebrated the day of cherries. But it is not the only celebration that commemorates this fruit. In addition, there are many popular festivals about this fruit in Spain, such as the cherry festival in Milagro, Navarra; or the Cherry Fair in the Jerte Valley (which has cherries with protected designation of origin, highly appreciated and high quality cherries).
But they are not the only ones, because in Japan, the cherry blossom, or sakura, is a national symbol.
Every year, when the cherry blossoms are in bloom, they celebrate the Hanami Festival. All the families spend the day in the parks and gardens of Japan under the cherry blossoms.
A spectacle worth seeing, especially when the flowers begin to fall, making a beautiful shower of flower petals ranging from white to pink, with countless shades in between.
How to celebrate Cherry Day
This celebration was born in the United States. There, every August 28th, families go out to eat in the fields or nearby parks, taking with them cherries or cherry pies.
It coincides with the end of the summer to, in this way, also say goodbye to the good weather with a good party.
This day was created because of the great fame of cherry pies in the United States. These pies consist of a puff pastry dough filled with cherries and then baked.
Cherries arrived there (in North America) around the year 1600, but it was not until the 19th century when they began to be cultivated.
